Taking driver's ed online may seem like something that would limit
the student's ability to learn properly. However, as it turns out online
instruction is just as good as classroom instruction. Some states, most
prominently California, have adopted online driver training with great
success. In fact, many students find they learn at the same level and
the online learning format actually has several benefits.

Comparison of online and classroom drivers ed:
-
Studies have shown that the results of both formats of instruction
produce equal results. In particular, a study done by the WIsconsin DOT
in 2009 showed virtually no difference in performance of those students
who took classroom or online lessons for their driver's education.
-
In either case, the student is learning the "theory" of driving and
not the actual "hands-on". And in both cases, students are required to
take several hours of in-car instruction as well as practice with their
guardian.
-
Online driving lessons have a major advantage in the ability of the
student to take the course from the location of their choice as long as
they have access to a computer with web access. Students can take online
drivers education in their home, at school, the library, and many other
locations conducive to learning.
-
Just as important is the ability for the student to take their online
driver training at any time they wish. This allows them to take the
course when they are fully awake and in the "mood" to learn.
-
A major advantage of online education in general is the ability of
the student to learn at their own pace. In-class instruction is taken at
the pace of the instructor and often does not provide the best learning
experience for the student.
-
It is often less expensive to take driver's ed online rather than in a
classroom. Since the expense of a classroom is not incurred, the cost
of online training is usually cheaper.
-
The learning experience itself is customized and allows the student
to review difficult sections at any time. Also, quizzes and test are
integrated allowing the student to obtain feedback on the retention of
the material in the most effective manner.
