E-Learning 2012: trends, developments and prospects

Discover the latest trends, developments and prospects of the E-Learning in 2012 . This survey is conducted on during the month of january 2012 through an online questionnaire from 193 Belgian companies. Of these 193 companies, nearly 50% have more than 500 employees. It is from this figure that the results were derived and analyzed.

1. The number of companies offering online courses is increasing

If we use 2011 figures, 65% of companies were offering E-Learning course. In 2012, they are 78%, an increase of 13% in one year. These figures confirm that large companies have finally reached the milestone of shyness from this type of training.
This is understandable, given that for the (very) large companies integrate e-learning course in-house proves to be a wise choice a wise choice in terms of ROI(Return on Investment .

2. The majority of E-Learning courses are still taught in self-training

Again, no major changes when compared with the figures of last year: 72% of E-Learning courses are always taught to learners in self-training.

I had already expressed doubts about the relative effectiveness of such approach, unless the optimal conditions for success are in place (especially in terms of motivation, social interaction and involvement of the hierarchy) .
Clearly, apart from certain types of content releated to knowldge such as informational content or related to the establishment of new internal processes, I remain skeptical over the effectiveness of E- Learning "asynchronous and individual" .

3. Voice and video media confirm their place as "standard"

We had already seen in 2010, the data confirm once again this year if the texts and pictures had already established their status as a pillar in the online training modules, it is the the turn of the audio (80%) and video (72%)  in E-Learning course.

6. Social features up slightly

With the increase in blended learning (blended learning) is one of the new that makes me the most pleasure: the age of Web 2.0, we see appear finally some progress in the implementation if socail features and collaborative tools.
Thus, the proportion of course-enabled document sharing increases to 34% (against 21% in 2010) and use of forums from 16% to 25% in 2011. Certainly, there is still work to do to impose the Social Learning in Corporate, but I think it remains a positive and encouraging sign for the future!
By cons, oddly enough, while the Serious Games and playful learning not hurt buzzer recently, the results indicate a decrease in the proportion of courses incorporating games. : it rose from 37% in 2010 to only 20% 2011, still down 17%! I admit I find it difficult to analyze and interpret this data. If the inspiration comes to you, do not hesitate to share your opinion by posting a comment below.

The main trends that I take from the survey E-Learning 2012

  • Firstly the increase inblended learning courses (Blended Learning). It is truly an educational device on which it will rely increasingly, given the limitations of E-Learning "traditional" .
  • Then the shy and slow (but steady) progress of social learning. She arrives late, it's true, but better late than never! At discharge of large companies, we can understand their difficulty in establishing such a dynamic in-house, given the changes and adaptations it raises.
