Have you ever considered a proofreading course?

A woman who wanted to change her job from journalist to proofreader and copywriter found that distance learning paid dividends.
Evelyn Huggett spent four months doing a distance learning proofreading course, and found it was an inexpensive way of learning the new skills.
Evelyn, from Watford, used to work for a news websites.
She said: ‘The course met my expectations – and then some! The tutorial support was excellent. Marked assignments were returned quickly, with plenty information and explanation.
‘The tutor was always more than willing to answer my queries, and provided me with extra information whenever I asked. His style of tutoring was helpful and encouraging at all times, and I felt his criticisms were fair and justified.'
Evelyn's course was delivered as attachments by email. What was her opinion of the course content?
She added: ‘It was a good, comprehensive course and provided a huge amount of information and helpful websites. It covered most of the major genres of proofreading and copywriting, giving me the chance to gain experience in each.
‘I never realised that an online proofreading course would be so effective.
‘I learnt how to write copy to sell services and products, as opposed to writing for the reader's entertainment – quite a different ball game!
‘I have also learned how to source and check information, understand publishing and proofreading terminology, how to present copy professionally, and was given a lot of advice on how to go about finding work.'
Evelyn, a mother of three, found the course was especially useful because she could work when she wanted to – there were no fixed timetables.
She explained: ‘Learning is hard for busy mums. Whatever colleges saying about equal opportunities, it's still difficult juggling a family with a part-time job and studying too.
‘But my course enabled me to fit work round my lifestyle and other commitments, and there were no deadlines, so there wasn't the pressure of falling behind.
‘I was able to do my work in odd pockets of time in the evenings and weekends. I even looked forward to it, it made a nice break.'
Would Evelyn recommend the course to a friend?
‘Definitely!' she said.
