Online Proofreading courses - make the change

A woman who was finding it hard to find work living in Switzerland has described how doing a distance learning course helped her crack the language barrier.
Sophie Pelham had always been interested in books and the written language.
But she explained: ‘I was living abroad, and am not working because of the language barrier. I thought that by doing thes course I might be able to find work that I would enjoy doing.
‘On top of, that the business language of Switzerland is English, so I hoped to be able to offer my services to companies over here.'
So Sophie enrolled on a distance learning proofreading course, and found this helped considerably.
Did the course meet her expectations? She said: ‘For the most part, yes. The first two modules were very basic, though a necessary part of the course. The other modules were very interesting, especially the proofreading exercises.
‘It took me about six months to complete the course, though I wasn't doing it continually. And afterwards I was able to find work doing proofreading for some Swiss firms who used English on their websites, and also some English firms with offices over here.'
Sophie, was impressed with the quality of the tutorial support. ‘I had no major problems, so had to use the tutorial support very little. But it was there when I needed it,' she explained. ‘The tutor was friendly, approachable and obviously knew his subject inside out. And he was able to explain things really simply.
‘I was impressed by the speed at which the online proofreading course worked. I usually got a response the same day, and often quicker than that.
‘The course content covered most parts of proofreading and I learnt the basic grounding to become a proofreader. I now have the confidence to look at a piece of work and mark most of the mistakes.
‘If anyone had told me I could pass a proofreading course, I'd have laughed. But I managed it OK and have recommended it to several friends since. It's a brilliant way to study if you live abroad, since you can contact your tutor by email or instant messaging.
