Proofreading - make money in your spare time

A teacher has managed to supplement his income by becoming a part-time proofreader.
Dick Meadows now does proofreading in his spare time, to top up his wages after completing a distance learning proofreading course.
Dick explained: ‘I wanted to learn a new skill, and I consider myself to have good literacy skills, at least when it comes to spotting spelling/grammar mistakes.
‘So I wanted to see what avenues I could apply them to besides key skills tutoring . I saw on a local forum that someone was recommending proofreading.'
Dick took around 12 months to complete the course, and fitted his studies around his work and other commitments. He said: ‘It was very useful to be able to dip in and out whenever I was able to do so. I feel a lot better informed now about what being a proofreader involves and the processes.
‘The tutorial support was mainly through exercise feedback and I was very pleased with it - I liked the fact that e-mails were addressed me personally throughout and didn't feel at all generic.'
Dick new all about setting homework. So how did he find the exercises that were set on his proofreading course?
He said: ‘I thought the texts were very well chosen, had good choices of subject and vocabulary, and were always interesting and not opinionated to begin with - this helped me to stay focused on the task at hand.
‘Plus I liked the fact that symbols were introduced later, rather than straight away - it didn't feel like having to learn too much too soon.
‘I learnt more about the role of a proofreader within an organisation, the way proofreading is done (and the symbols used), and a bit about how to find work.'
So overall, his first experience with a distance learning proofreading course was very positive.
He said: ‘The course was very well organised, and I wouldn't change anything about its content either.
I found the information on the last module about finding work very useful. It would be interesting to hear about how other students have got on with finding work in this area.'
